Here are some things you can do to improve communication with people who have a hearing loss.
Keep eye contact
Visual clues like facial expressions and lip movements do a lot to help listeners understand your words
Don’t shout
Speech becomes distorted and difficult to understand at higher volumes. People may not appreciate having attention drawn to their hearing.
Rephrase, don’t repeat
Some words are more difficult to recognise than others. Try avoiding filler words and long sentences.
Reduce social tension
Maintain a normal tone of voice and be patient. Take a pause if you get frustrated. Use humour, it often helps.
Avoid background noise
Voices can be difficult to hear because they are in competition with all the other sound sources. Understanding speech at a loud dinner party can be as challenging as at a rock concert.
Be sure you’re understood
Remember you won’t always be told when you are misunderstood. Be sure to ask when doubtful.
Ask for help
Let people tell you what makes communication easier. Pay attention to what situations are better than others.
Don’t overdo it
Show consideration, but avoid special treatment. Show respect, and don’t participate in covering up the problem.
