If you have arranged a hearing test, or are planning to get concerns about your hearing checked out, you may be surprised to find that we recommend bringing a friend or relative with you to your appointment. There are several reasons for this, as it helps us to diagnose your hearing loss and it can be good to have the support of someone you trust.
A hearing screening will be offered to you in order to work out whether you are experiencing hearing loss and, if necessary, further hearing tests will be arranged. Anyone can experience hearing loss and there can be many causes of this, so it is important to discover the extent of the loss and whether it can be remedied simply, such as an ear wax blockage, or whether you may need hearing aids.
Why do I need a Companion for a Hearing Test?
Whenever you are attending a medical appointment or examination, it can be useful to bring a supportive person with whom you feel comfortable. For a hearing test, this can also help with the process of finding out about your hearing loss, for the following reasons:
- A companion can give perspective. Someone who spends time with you on a regular basis will be aware of how your hearing loss affects your daily life and of what you may be unable to hear.
- A familiar voice can help. When you are being fitted with hearing aids, the process of trying different models and types can be much more easily evident if the voice you are hearing is one that is familiar to you. This should make it much easier to work out what is most effective for you.
- We share a lot of information. It can be overwhelming trying to recall everything you are told during a medical appointment, and it is very helpful to have someone else with you to take notes and ask questions. It can also be useful to have help with filling out forms and providing the information your audiologist requires.
- Support is invaluable. If you discover that you have a significant hearing loss, or you are worried by the prospect of wearing hearing aids, it can be very helpful to have someone who knows you well to support you and share the process.
