A conversation with Hidden Hearing’s multiple award-winning hearing aid audiologist, Mr. Enda Dooley, resident in our Merrion Road Ballsbridge Branch, reveals some unique insights into this often misunderstood and seldom known profession.
Until I experienced first-hand in my own family, the extremely frustrating and often debilitating consequences of hearing loss, I had no idea about the denial often used, or the mentally and physically draining extra effort required for everyday communication and listening to thing’s we mostly take for granted unfortunately.
Audiologist of the Year
Winner of “Audiologist of the year” 2015 as well as awarded “Certificate of Commendation” (only three awarded for the same competition each year in the whole of Ireland !!) in 2014, 2016 and 2017, it’s fair to say Enda has a unique understanding about treating hearing loss and helping people to hear better.
The number one issue I see every day, is my patient’s initial denial about having a hearing loss and the perceived stigma attached to treating their hearing loss. I try to assure them that hearing loss is not deafness, it is a speech clarity issue in most cases, as in “I hear your voice but I don’t distinguish all the words clearly the way I used to”.
As hearing loss is painless and sightless (you still have the same ears you did when you were 20) it is natural to blame the family member, priest, news reader, or friend for not speaking correctly, mumbling or even having bad elocution!! I hear these excuses every day.
Please try to remember back to when you were younger and had perfect hearing…nobody spoke too low, spoke too fast or mumbled then did they?
Hearing Loss Causes
The reality is that hearing loss has many causes, but most predominantly in my patients it’s a natural degeneration of the microscopic hair cells in the Cochlea or inner ear, caused by age or possible noise damage.
This does not mean however that you have to live with the consequences and that is where we as hearing aid audiologists help to change our patients lives every day. This gives me great joy and its why I love my job.
To me it’s not about hearing aids. It’s all about the quality of life improvement they give you, every minute of every day for the rest of your life.
I urge you not to delay, get tested today… we can help you hear more words in the sentence, with better clarity, more comfort with less effort for you and everybody around you, as well as help to protect the natural hearing you have left and just get on with your life.
