Joe Duffy HHThe news and the views, discussion and debate, the fun, frivolity and weighty issues of the day are all heard countrywide on a daily basis, courtesy of skilled broadcaster Joe Duffy and his compulsive listening ‘Liveline’ programme on RTÉ Radio 1.

And so, a new Hidden Hearing sponsorship package is an appropriate association for the Irish hearing healthcare experts, emphasising the power of listening and the ability to engage, Dolores Madden, Marketing Director, Hidden Hearing believes.

“Joe Duffy has over 300,000 listeners daily and addresses the big and small issues of the day that matter to people.  The ability to hear is hugely significant if we are to connect with people, to interpret what is going on in the world, and to enjoy the social and emotional aspects of life fully”, Dolores Madden, Hidden Hearing, Marketing Director says.

Delighted with the new high-profile media sponsorship, Hidden Hearing is linking the Liveline partnership to its national ‘Campaign for Better Hearing’, which is currently being rolled out, and is part of a global initiative focused on the power of sound to enrich lives.

The Hidden Hearing campaign mostly comprises educational initiatives, and offers free hearing tests to the over 50s, encouraging people to check their hearing and to be aware of the knock-on health issues around untreated hearing loss.

Approximately 12% of Ireland’s adult population, somewhere in the region of 600,000 people, has a hearing difficulty, and yet only around 5% of these seek treatment.  More than half of those who seek help will get private treatment, and Hidden Hearing is currently the largest single provider of private hearing healthcare in Ireland, accounting for almost 49% of that market. *

Hearing loss is also shockingly prevalent across Ireland. In fact, 1 in 5 Irish adults suffer from at least a mild hearing loss. Even among younger adults, ages 18-24, they are showing early signs of noise induced hearing loss. By the age of 55 a 1/4 of the population report a significant deterioration in hearing and by 65 this rises to 1/3.

The big concern with hearing, apart from the obvious safety aspects, and the ability to engage with life and entertainment in general, is the knock-on health effects, Dolores Maddensays.

“Research has shown that the associated impacts of untreated hearing loss include social isolation, depression, dementia, diminished heart health and stroke.  And, where hearing loss is untreated, the physical problem only becomes worse, and sooner”, the expert says.

Whether listening or contributing, fans of Joe Duffy’s Liveline, now sponsored by Hidden Hearing, can tune in, Monday to Friday, from 1.45pm to 3.00pm.
