Tinnitus affects up to one in five people. For some, it is more than a minor irritation and can influence sleep, concentration, mood and overall wellbeing. During Tinnitus Awareness Week, GP Medical Advisor Dr Clodagh Gallagher is encouraging people not to ignore the signs.

Dr Clodagh explains that tinnitus is extremely common but often misunderstood. Many people try to cope alone without realising that effective support is available. Seeking guidance is an important step towards reducing its impact and regaining a sense of control.

If you notice constant ringing, buzzing or whooshing sounds, particularly in one ear or with a pulsing quality, it is important to arrange a professional assessment. A combination of hearing care, medical review and personalised management strategies can make a meaningful difference.

Tinnitus is not only linked to loud noise. Age related hearing changes, earwax or fluid build up, stress, fatigue, certain medications, head or neck injuries and ongoing health conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disorders can all play a role. Understanding the cause is key to managing symptoms effectively.

There are also practical steps that can support day to day comfort. Protecting your ears in noisy places, using gentle background sound at night, practising breathing or mindfulness techniques, and keeping note of potential triggers can all help. If tinnitus is affecting your quality of life, speaking with an audiologist is an important next step.

A comprehensive hearing and tinnitus assessment provides clarity. Diagnostic audiology can include advanced hearing tests, a detailed tinnitus evaluation, balance screening, clinical review of ear related symptoms and a clear plan based on your results. This ensures you understand what is happening and what support options are available.

You do not have to simply live with tinnitus. As Dr Clodagh advises, a conversation with your GP or audiologist can be the first step towards clearer hearing, reassurance and personalised care.
