Question 1 of 1
Have you taken an online hearing test before?

Step 1 of 3

20% of people over 60 suffer from hearing loss. The signs below are the most common that people chat about with Hidden Hearing audiologists. Many people don’t realise they have hearing loss until a link is made. Now it’s easy to check. We do thousands of hearing checks per annum.

Why people check their hearing online

1. You find it difficult to follow conversations
A silver-haired individual with a side braid gestures thoughtfully, seated indoors with a blurred figure in the foreground; the setting suggests a professional consultation, possibly at a hearing clinic.
2. You often ask people to repeat themselves
An older adult wearing a light blue shirt rests their elbow on a surface while holding their head with one hand. The background features indoor greenery and blurred surroundings.
3. People seem to mumble when they speak
Three individuals are closely positioned together in a well-lit indoor setting, with their faces blurred. One person wears glasses, and the central figure dons a white textured top.
4. Friends or family comment on your hearing challenges

5. You turn up the volume on the TV higher than normal
Woman clutching her head, possibly indicating stress or discomfort.
6. You feel tired after straining to hear at social events

How to prepare for the online hearing test

  1. Find a quiet place where you can take the test without any disturbances.
  2. If possible, wear a pair of headphones, as this can improve test accuracy.
  3. You will have an opportunity to test the sound before you begin.
  4. Once you've done so, you're ready to start the test.

What happens during the Online Hearing Test?

The online hearing test consists of three main parts:

1) Everyday listening situations Answer 4 self-evaluation questions about your hearing abilities

2) Tone testing  Listen to a selection of tones and see how well you hear at different sound frequencies

3) Conversation comprehension Listen to a short conversation and respond to a few questions

What does my result mean?

Your online hearing test looks at your answers to questions about your everyday hearing, alongside how you hear different tones and sounds during the test. Together, these provide a general indication of your hearing ability.

Your result is not a diagnosis. It is designed to help you understand whether you may be experiencing some level of hearing loss and whether a full hearing test could be worthwhile.

No hearing loss

Your results do not indicate any obvious signs of hearing loss based on this online test. If you are still finding conversations difficult or noticing changes in your hearing, a full hearing test can provide a more detailed picture.

Moderate hearing loss

You may find conversations take more effort, particularly in groups, busy places or when speaking on the phone. You might also notice that you regularly ask people to repeat themselves or need the TV volume higher than others.

Severe hearing loss

You may be finding everyday conversations increasingly difficult to follow. You might rely more on watching people's faces, asking others to repeat themselves or increasing the volume of the TV or other devices.

Your result

If your result suggests you may have hearing loss, it is worth finding out more about what this could mean for you. A full hearing assessment allows an audiologist to look at your hearing in greater detail and talk through your results with you.

For Enda Dooley, Hidden Hearing Audiologist, helping people understand the difference better hearing can make is an important part of his work:

“Seeing and hearing about the life changing difference our consultation and fitting of hearing aids makes to patients, families, and friends inspires me to be the best audiologist I can be.”

There is no pressure to make a decision about hearing aids. A full hearing test simply gives you the opportunity to understand your hearing in more detail, ask questions and discuss your options with an audiologist.

What your online result cannot tell you

Your online result is a useful indication, but it cannot tell you everything about your hearing. It cannot physically examine your ears, diagnose the type or cause of hearing loss, or replace a calibrated clinical hearing test.

If you are wondering what does my online hearing test result mean, a full hearing test is the best way to understand your hearing in more detail. An audiologist can explain your results, answer your questions and discuss what, if anything, could help.
