Did you know that a digital hearing aid can contain more sophisticated technology than a smart phone? Hearing aids provide great solutions to the problem of hearing loss, and regular maintenance will help them to function well for several years. However, problems can occur with hearing aids, and knowing how to fix common issues can be very helpful.

Here at Hidden Hearing, we pride ourselves on excellent aftercare for those who wear hearing aids. We offer check up appointments and servicing, and we will show you how to care for your hearing aid at home to avoid faults developing. If you have a problem that you are unable to resolve, please visit us as soon as possible so that we can help you to have a better hearing experience.

Common Hearing Aid Problems And How To Fix Them:

  1. Hearing aid not working. If your hearing aid stops working, first check that it is switched on correctly. Next, ensure that the battery is fitted correctly, and that it is charged. If the battery needs changing, you should be able to do this yourself, but your audiologist can show you how to do it if you are unsure.

  2. Hearing feedback. If your hearing aids are making an unusual noise, often a whistling sound, it is likely that it is not fitted into your ear correctly. If you cannot remove the device and get a better fit by yourself, go back to your audiologist as soon as possible as it may not be the right size for your ear.

  3. Problems with volume. If the sounds you are hearing are muffled or quieter than usual, you should check whether the hearing aid is clogged with earwax or moisture. You will be given full instructions on how to clean your hearing aid, but certain parts, such as the tube, may need replacing if they become blocked.

  4. Water damage. If your hearing aids have been exposed to water or high humidity, this can cause permanent damage to the devices. Using a dehumidifier, or even placing them in a bowl of uncooked rice can help them to dry thoroughly, restoring their function and preventing serious damage.
