Hearing Aid Audiologist
“I will journey with you on hearing care for as long as is needed.”
My name is Alan Johnston, and I work with Hidden Hearing, supporting patients across Athlone and Athenry. I have always wanted to work in an industry where my efforts can make a real difference to someone else's life. There is a great sense of satisfaction in meeting a patient for the first time, putting them at ease, and helping them address their hearing loss. Knowing I have made a positive difference to both their life, and the lives of their family is something I take great pride in.
Before joining Hidden Hearing, I worked in the audio industry, providing equipment across consumer audio, aviation and music. I also supplied devices that helped people with hearing loss enjoy television and radio again. That experience gave me my first insight into how the right technology, when implemented correctly, can significantly improve someone's quality of life.
What I enjoy most is knowing that a patient has a weight lifted from them when we find the right solution for their hearing loss. I believe hearing care is an ongoing partnership, and I always tell my patients, "I will journey with you on hearing care for as long as is needed." Regular hearing checks are essential to monitor changes in hearing and ensure intervention happens as early as possible. The sooner hearing loss is identified and managed, the better the outcome in treating it and slowing its progression.
If you are concerned about your hearing, there is nothing to fear. Our kind and friendly team will guide you through every step of your hearing journey.

When should you consider getting a hearing test in our clinic in Athlone?
We recommend booking a free hearing test if:
- You have difficulties following a group conversation
- You often ask people to repeat themselves
- Your friends and family say you turn the television up too loud
- You have difficulties following phone conversations
It is important to remember that hearing loss often happens gradually, and it might be difficult for you to notice changes in your hearing. The examples provided above are signs of hearing loss, and if you experience one or more of them, we recommend getting your hearing tested.
Why should you consider taking a hearing test?
If you experience symptoms of hearing loss, or if a friend or loved one recognises that you have signs of hearing loss, we advise getting your hearing tested as soon as possible. Even in cases of mild hearing loss, it is good to be proactive and seek treatment as early as possible. Hearing loss can worsen if it is left untreated. After all, your sense of hearing gives you the ability to connect with the world around you.
