My name is Mark, and I want to change lives for the better, helping people overcome the stigmas and challenges of hearing loss. This desire is the reason I chose a career in audiology. Early intervention can prevent withdrawal, isolation, depression, and many other adverse effects of hearing loss. I feel incredibly privileged to be in a position to help more people hear better here at Hidden Hearing. It is extremely rewarding.
My childhood friend's mother had a significant hearing loss; however, she was in denial for some time. This caused a lot of unnecessary frustration and communication challenges.

For me, the patient journey can be emotional. Often patients are reluctant to admit their hearing loss, and it can also take time for patients to accept a definitive diagnosis and treatment. When they trial hearing aid technology, their face illuminates with joy as sound infiltrates the barriers. This moment is magical, and it is a privilege to share it with your patient.

Audiology is about making long-term connections with patients, building relationships and trust. It's encouraging to witness the dramatic change in a patient when their hearing improves and lives recharge with new energy and enthusiasm.

I will never forget a patient of mine, from Dublin, who struggled with her hearing for years and had a significant level of loss to both ears. She had put her hearing health on the long finger, assuming that nothing could be done to improve it. When I first met her, I could see straight away that she had difficulty hearing me and was heavily reliant on reading my lips. Her concerned husband joined her on the day of the test. He had been trying to encourage her to take a test for years because hearing loss had led to miscommunications.

I conducted a hearing test and fitted her with hearing aids; however, when I spoke to her, she did not respond.
She could not speak because she was crying. This was the first time in a long time that she was able to hear a speaking voice clearly without relying on lip-reading. She was highly emotional, and to be honest, I shed a tear too. It was fantastic to see, and I knew how much relief she was feeling. I felt incredibly proud because had she not come in to see me that day, she may not have received the help she needed. The only thing she regretted was not listening to her husband and doing something a little sooner.

I strongly suggest you don't delay treatment for hearing loss. Timely intervention enables effective treatment to improve long-term hearing ability by preventing or slowing further decline. It might be something as simple as a wax build up that needs treatment.
