Why should you consider taking a hearing test?
If you experience symptoms of hearing loss, or if a friend or loved one recognises that you have signs of hearing loss, we advise getting your hearing tested as soon as possible. Even in cases of mild hearing loss, it is good to be proactive and seek treatment as early as possible. Hearing loss can worsen if it is left untreated. Yvonne Doyle

Hearing Aid Audiologist

“The difference the new technology made to his life won me the Audiologist of the year title, which is something I am immensely proud of.”

My name is Yvonne Doyle, Hearing loss is in my family, so I saw first-hand the impact it has on not only the sufferer and their family. Over time, I became more interested in audiology and the life-changing benefits of using hearing instruments. My studies in audiology and the ongoing improvements in technology continue to reaffirm my passion for my career. Hidden Hearing gives me the platform to practice my skills and use my knowledge to help others in providing life-changing hearing healthcare.

While the anatomy and physiology of the ear have not changed, the impact of hearing loss has been examined much more closely by the medical community. Reports in the Lancet medical magazine confirm links between hearing loss and dementia, which the audiology industry has recognised for many years. The advances in sound, technology and Bluetooth capability eliminates the historical deterrents of hearing aids. Hearing aids are discrete, comfortable to wear and offer hearing ability on par with natural sound in every environment. Now, if you have hearing loss, there are solutions available for every need and requirement.

I hold a Diploma in Hearing Aid Audiology from Queen Margaret University in Scotland. I am board certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences, and I am a registered member of the Irish Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (ISHAA).
A large part of my job is to offer solutions for all types of hearing loss. With the fast-changing nature of technology, it is vital that I continuously upskill to keep abreast of changes in technology.

I am currently honing my skills in patient-centred care. I am attending a course through the IDA Institute on the psychology of hearing loss and the patient journey from awareness and diagnosis to treatment.

There is nothing more satisfying than seeing someone walk out of the clinic smiling and walking tall because they are confident in their hearing. So often, patients don’t realise how good life with sound can be until they present for a hearing test and try hearing instruments. The satisfaction of that part of the job is very fulfilling.

In 2017 I was nominated for an award by a client that I had dealt with for many years. He was a long-term hearing aid user, and I was familiar with his changing hearing. After many years I introduced him to a newer technology offering better hearing quality. He trusted my advice and has never looked back. His nomination, and the difference the latest technology made to his life, won me the Audiologist of the Year title that year, which I am immensely proud of.

My advice is – don’t ignore the signs. Hearing loss is permanent and progressive. The longer you ignore it, the worse it becomes and the harder it is to treat. Instead, take a test and discover what is causing your hearing loss. For example, earwax build-up could be to blame; you might have an ear infection that requires treatment or need hearing aids. Once you know what’s causing your hearing loss, you can make an informed decision regarding treatment. Ignoring it will not make it disappear!
