We are proud to recognise Tommy Swarbrigg as a recipient of our Gift of Hearing programme, an initiative dedicated to helping individuals reconnect with the world around them through life-changing hearing care and personalised support.

Tommy spent decades immersed in music, performing, recording and working long hours in studio environments where high sound levels are part of everyday life. While this passion shaped his career, it also exposed him to prolonged noise that gradually impacted his hearing. Like many people, the change was subtle at first and easy to overlook.

Over time, Tommy began to experience noticeable hearing loss, particularly in conversations. Background noise became more difficult to manage, and following discussions in social settings required increased effort. Reflecting on this, he shared, “I did not realise how much I was missing until it started to affect everyday conversations” What once felt natural began to require concentration, often leading to frustration and fatigue.

This gradual change started to affect the moments that mattered most. Tommy found himself asking others to repeat themselves more often and feeling less confident engaging in group conversations. Time with family became more challenging, especially when trying to keep up with the voices of his grandchildren. The possibility of losing connection to these moments was deeply concerning.

Through the Gift of Hearing programme, Tommy was supported with state-of-the-art hearing aids and expert, personalised care from his audiologist David. From the initial consultation through to fitting and aftercare, Tommy received guidance tailored to his specific level of hearing loss, lifestyle and listening environments. This approach ensured he not only improved his hearing, but also regained confidence in how he communicated day to day.

The impact was immediate and life changing. Sounds that had gradually faded returned with clarity, and conversations became easier and more natural. Tommy described the experience as a turning point, saying, “It feels like the world has opened up again.” With the right support in place, he was able to reconnect with his surroundings, re-engage socially, and once again enjoy the richness of everyday sound.

Since launching in 2018, the Gift of Hearing programme has supported individuals across Ireland by providing access to expert audiology care and advanced hearing technology. The programme is built around the belief that better hearing leads to better quality of life, helping people stay connected to family, friends and the moments that matter most.

Tommy’s journey is a powerful reminder that hearing loss often develops gradually and can go unnoticed until it begins to impact communication, confidence and overall wellbeing. Taking action early and seeking professional support can make a lasting and meaningful difference.
