World Hearing Day, marked globally on 3 March, is an annual reminder of the importance of protecting our hearing and making ear and hearing care accessible for all. This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) wanted to shine a light on children’s hearing health, with the official 2026 theme: “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children.”
In the spirit of this theme, we were delighted to visit Our Lady of Mercy Primary School in Booterstown, where our Chief Audiologist (NI), Tim Pringle, met with 5th class pupils to talk about all things hearing.
Bringing Hearing Health Into the Classroom
During the session, Tim introduced the pupils to how hearing works, common causes of hearing damage, and the simple steps all children can take to protect their ears. He also encouraged them to become hearing health heroes at home, sharing what they learned with friends and family to help spread safe listening habits.
With WHO placing a strong emphasis this year on the role of schools and communities in early identification and prevention of hearing issues, this visit was a fantastic opportunity for us to make an impact and support the message.
A Special Spotlight From RTÉ News2Day
Adding even more excitement to the day, we were joined by Florence Okojie, journalist with RTÉ News2Day. Florence captured the energy of the visit and helped shine a national spotlight on the importance of children’s hearing health.
The girls were thrilled to be part of the piece, and their curiosity and engagement made for fantastic moments on camera. Sharing this positive message through youth-focused media like News2Day helps amplify awareness far beyond the classroom.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Healthy Listeners
The 5th class girls showed wonderful enthusiasm as they learned:
- How to listen safely when using headphones
- Why volume and exposure time matter
- What signs of hearing trouble to watch for
- How small daily habits can protect their ears long-term
A Day to Remember
Our visit to Our Lady of Mercy Primary School was energetic, inspiring, and full of meaningful conversations. With the help of Tim Pringle, Florence Okojie, and the brilliant pupils, staff including Principal John O’Boyle, we were proud to celebrate World Hearing Day in a way that genuinely empowers young people.
Together, we’re helping ensure every child has the knowledge and confidence to care for their hearing, today and for the future.
