It is important to remember that hearing loss often happens gradually, and it might be difficult for you to notice changes in your hearing. The examples provided above are signs of hearing loss, and if you experience one or more of them, we recommend getting your hearing tested.

Why should you consider taking a hearing test?
If you experience symptoms of hearing loss, or if a friend or loved one recognises that you have signs of hearing loss, we advise getting your hearing tested as soon as possible. Even in cases of mild hearing loss, it is good to be proactive and seek treatment as early as possible. Hearing loss can worsen if it is left untreated. After all, your sense of hearing gives you the ability to connect with the world around you.

Audiologist Hidden Hearing

“I remember the tears in her eyes when I programmed and activated her aids for the first time. She realised just how much better she could now hear.”

My name is Fionnán, and I was drawn to a career in audiology as I had a desire to help people hear better. I discovered my eldest son had hearing loss from a young age. For a while, it went undiagnosed, and that was a very lonely and frustrating time for him. Thankfully his problems were resolved by hearing aids. I don’t want anyone else to experience the challenges my son did.

Seeing a patient's expression change from despair to absolute joy when they experience hearing for the first time in years is the most rewarding part of my work. Hidden Hearing genuinely cares for patients and is committed to improving lives and giving back to local communities. It is a business with a true purpose.

I treat patients for mild, moderate, and profound hearing loss. I also specialise in communication disorders and aural rehabilitation and have a deep understanding of the emotional, psychological, physical, and cognitive issues associated with hearing loss. I hold a Higher Education Diploma in Hearing Aid Audiology (HDip HAA) from Queen Margaret University (QMU), UK. As a practising audiologist, I keep up to date with the latest practices, research, and innovations.
Each patient is unique, and you are always learning on the job. When a patient presents with profound hearing loss, it's nice to know that I can make an enormous difference to their quality of life. Witnessing the transformation over the months that follow inspires me to be the best audiologist that I can be.

I am saddened when a patient with hearing loss defers treatment. I appreciate that it takes time for patients to come to terms with their diagnosis, and hearing loss is stigmatised. The patient will ultimately decide what is best for them. Often, people take time to process their diagnosis, make an informed decision and return for treatment. It thrills me to know they are taking control of their hearing health.

I once met a retired lady, who worked in a quiet environment but had quite an active social life. She rarely sits still for long! She had never had a hearing test and had no idea that she had significant hearing loss, even though her family had often commented. She had difficulty hearing her grandchildren which prompted the appointment. I have looked after her for 5 years now. I remember the tears in her eyes when I programmed and activated her aids for the first time. She realised just how much better she could now hear. Subsequent appointments confirmed she is now hearing well and enjoying time with her grandchildren. Also, her hearing has declined by very little in that time, due in no small measure to her binaural hearing aids.

Hearing loss is more common than you think, and it affects people of all ages. Keep an open mind. Your hearing loss might have a simple explanation and solution. I try to encourage all patients to get their hearing checked at regular intervals, 18-24 months apart if they don't feel they need hearing aids yet.

Watch the signs - the TV volume is rising, asking people to repeat themselves, staying home more when you would always have been much more social normally. Earlier intervention is best, so rather than waiting until your hearing declines to such an extent, I recommend you address the issue, as hearing aids will help you hear better immediately and can slow down the rate of the decline.

Audiologist Hidden Hearing

“I know what it is like to live with someone who has profound hearing loss. This sparked a real interest and passion inside me to become an audiologist.”

My name is Ryan, I understand hearing loss better than most, as a family member struggled with undiagnosed hearing loss for a considerable time. Their condition had a profound impact on the family, as they withdrew from socialisation, conversation, and life, becoming increasingly isolated because of hearing loss. They were then diagnosed with dementia 2 years ago. This sparked a real interest and passion inside me to become an audiologist. Hidden Hearing genuinely cares for patients and is committed to changing lives for the better. I am also passionate about hearing health and personally invested in preventing the negative impact of hearing loss and improving the quality of life for sufferers, their families, and friends.

I love my job, especially when I meet a patient who has all but lost the power of hearing, and I know I can help. Hearing technology enables miracles, and I am delighted to play my part in connecting the patient to the right technology and introduce them to a world of sounds.

I have recently prescribed instruments to a husband and wife in their 80's, who have lived with hearing loss for 20+ years. They changed from “In the Canal” technology to the new “Oticon More RITE” technology. The difference this has made to their life has been amazing. The clarity, distinction, and ease of hearing they both have experienced with the change in technology has been transformative.

I strongly recommend people take regular hearing tests, even if they think their hearing is fine. Hearing loss often goes undetected, and people with hearing decline subconsciously read lips and facial expressions to aid understanding. If hearing loss is caught early, treatment can prevent or slow further deterioration, and the sufferer can avoid the frustration and anguish caused by the inability to hear.
