Do you think you know about hearing loss?

Here at Hidden Hearing, we work with many clients with different types of hearing loss, and we know that everyone has a different story. However, there are many assumptions and misconceptions about hearing loss in wider society, and we believe that it is very important to challenge these whenever we can.

TED Talks About Hearing Loss

It takes a lot of courage to step up and talk to an audience, and this is especially difficult when your mission is to discuss difficulties you have faced in your own life. We love the following TED talks, which blow assumptions out of the water and challenge us to think about hearing loss in a whole new way.

1. Navigating deafness in a hearing world

This superb talk allows us to enter the world of Rachel Kolb, who talks with great honesty and openness about her own experiences of growing up as a deaf child born to hearing parents. She discusses the challenges she faced in learning to speak, and introduces her audience to many new ideas and perspectives. This is a great talk that gives a broader understanding of the stresses faced by deaf people, and is a very interesting introduction to the concepts of speech and hearing.

2. A Journey of Hearing

In this excellent talk, Connor Sullivan talks us through his own experience of hearing loss and cochlear implants, and allows us to share in his rediscovery of sound. This talk is informative and personal, and gives great insight into how cochlear implants work and how they can transform the lives of those who receive them.

3. Hearing Loss CPR – Keeping the Connection Alive

Linnaea Mallette talks directly and honestly about her own experiences of living in denial about hearing loss, and about the difficulties of connecting with others when living with a hearing impairment. This is a very useful – and humorous – talk that illustrates the frustrations of living with hearing loss and offers practical and helpful solutions to many of the problems that can arise.
