On Tuesday 22nd of May, we were delighted to have expert Audiologist, Peter Sydserff make an appearance on the RTE Today Show. Peter was interviewed along with Shona Maguire who currently wears Oticon Opn hearing devices provided by Hidden Hearing. Shona was Discussing her hearing difficulties which she has had from a very young age, and peter was on hand to share his abundance of hearing healthcare knowledge. When Shona was a toddler she was diagnosed with cholesteatoma. This occurs when abnormal cells collect deep inside the ear. These non-cancerous growths can cause a discharge from the ears, hearing loss, vertigo, and tinnitus. Shona Received the necessary surgery and was one of the first people in Ireland to receive the procedure, and thankfully it was successful. However unfortunately, despite the growths in her inner-ear being treated, they left behind a hearing loss that was irreparable.
The condition reoccurred one year later and Shona was diagnosed with the condition in her other ear, and in her final year of college the doctor identified another benign growth. Regardless of all the hurdles thrown in her way as a result of the cholesteatoma, such as difficulty hearing in class, Shona still achieved her life-long dream of becoming a Vet.
Originally, Shona was given public health hearing aids which made her journey through education difficult at times. Shona stated “Because the hearing aids the public health system supplied were so basic, they amplified everything. The constant ringing drove me crazy.”
Recently Shona decided to try private sector hearing devices from Hidden Hearing, and we were happy to help. We provided her with a pair of state-of-the-art Oticon Opn hearing devices which were tailored exactly to meet her needs. As with all of our patients she was provided with free complementary after-care for life to ensure we are always there to provide a helping hand when needed. After receiving hearing devices from Hidden Hearing Shona stated:
- “That’s the first time I remember two fitting so well at the same time.”
- “once they were in place, I heard the audiologist’s footsteps on the carpet and that was a sound I’d never heard before”
- “When I went to a restaurant that night I was amazed to be able to follow a normal conversation with a group”
- “The main problem for people with hearing difficulties is that the background noises get all mushed together. But apparently, modern technology can deal with this.”
We wanted to share Shona’s insight as we hope it will help emphasise the benefits of our state-of the-art hearing aids, and how much they could change your life for the better. We were elated to hear of such great feedback and it reminds us of how important our service can be for the patients that we care for. It also highlights how advanced the latest technology is and how much more effective it can be for its users. We would strongly advise anyone who is currently wearing an older model of hearing aid or feels that they might need one, to enquire about the latest devices that are on offer. We feel they could really make a difference to your hearing and therefore improve your life in general.
