The 10 day countdown to Christmas is on!hearing loss this christmas

With our ‘last-few-bits’ dashes being well under way, everyone is finalising holiday plans, house visits and dinner guests.  Family gatherings with parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts are most definitely on the cards for the majority of us, and we can’t wait!

Family get-togethers are undoubtedly one of the best things about the holidays; re-uniting with loved ones for days full of festive food, drink, laughter and fun.

Although we prefer not to think about it, some of our closest relatives could be experiencing hearing loss this Christmas, meaning they could be missing out on a lot of the Christmas banter between friends and family, completely unbeknownst to everyone else.

That being said, there are a few things you can do to help a friend or family member with hearing loss this Christmas and ensure they spend every holiday actively involved in family fun and conversation.

3 Signs of Hearing Loss this Christmas

For earliest identification, it is important for all of us to be able to recognise the subtle signs of hearing loss so we can give a helping hand to our friends or relatives who may not even notice yet themselves:

  1. Group Interaction

If you suspect someone is suffering from hearing loss this Christmas, monitor how they act in group conversations. Many people with hearing issues find it hard to engage in group conversations and you may notice they’re unusually silent and appear withdrawn from the conversation. Those experiencing hearing problems find it particularly difficult to understand speech against background noise.

  1. Television/Radio Volume

Turning the volume higher when listening to music, radio or television is a very noticeable signs of hearing loss and one of the easiest signs to spot over the Christmas Holidays with all the great classics on the television!

  1. Repetition

Frequently asking others to repeat themselves or to speak more slowly, clearly and loudly is one of the most common signs of hearing loss. Keep an ear open for this one over Christmas.
