Earwax is a problem everyone has to deal with. The human body produces earwax as a protective measure (keeping out bacteria, bugs, and dirt), but sometimes TOO MUCH ear wax is produced. If left untreated you can end up suffering from hearing loss as earwax can clog your ears leaving you with a ringing sound and tinnitus symptoms.

Why Should You Clean Your Ears?

To prevent dust, germs, and bacteria from entering your inner ears

To reduce the risk of irritation, infection, or damage to the sensitive skin of your inner ear

To slow the growth and spread of bacteria (which lives in your ear canal)

To protect your ear from being irritated by exposure to water (such as when you go swimming)

Well, you only get rid of it if there is too much ear wax. An excess of ear wax can increase the presence of bacteria in your ears, making it more likely that you will suffer ear infections. It can also affect your hearing negatively. Many people think that there hearing is deteriorating – however it turns out to be just a build up of ear wax! If there is too much ear wax, you should clean your ears or have them irrigated professionally.

What Is The Best Way To Clean Your Ears?

We recommend that you have your earwax removed professionally as some methods of at home earwax removal can cause damage to the ear canal. Cotton swabs or Q-tips as there also known as – are one of the most popular ear cleaning options. They’re cheap, available in every supermarket, chemist, shopping center and are easy to use. However, did you know by doing this you risk putting wax further down your ear canal? At the beginning, it will just a small quantity of ear wax around the ear canal. But the more you push the ear wax deeper into your ear, the more wax builds up. Eventually, you’ve pushed so much wax into your ear that you have developed an ear plug of wax deep in the ear canal, and you can block the canal completely – leading to reduced hearing and a long lasting ringing sounds (Tinnitus).

A build up of ear wax in the ear canal can form plugs of ear wax and it causes a feeling of fullness & dulled hearing. A build up of ear wax can also cause a ringing in the ear (Tinnitus) or even a mild type of dizziness (Vertigo). Your ears are fragile and also can easily be ruptured by using cotton swabs.

There are many ways to clean your ears safely – Hidden Hearing recommends Ear Irrigation.

Professional Ear Irrigation (Syringing)

For those who want a safe solution, ear irrigation is an effective option to consider. Hidden Hearing offer free earwax removal by Irrigation to over 55s.

Note: DO NOT try this at home! Visit your local Hidden Hearing Clinic & seek advice from your local Ear Wax Removal Specialist or Audiologist.

Simply put, the treatment involves water injected from a syringe into your ear. Our Ear Wax Removal Specialists applying the treatment will point the tip of the syringe at the edges of the ear wax, with the goal of loosening up large chunks or globs of wax.

Once the wax is loosened, it can be removed with medical tweezers. It is a highly efficient ear-cleaning method, and it can get rid of ear wax blockages.

We recommend that before your Ear Wax Removal Appointment, you use ear drops 2/3 times daily for 3-5 days before your appointment.

Types of ear drops that can be used:

Olive Oil

Almond Oil

Sodium Bicarbonate ear drops

Sodium Chloride ear drops

How to use ear drops 3/5 days before your Ear Wax Removal Appointment

Start your appointment preparation 3/5 days before hand

Pour a few drops into the affected ear 2/3 times a day for up to 5 days

When you pour the few drops into your ear, lie with the affected ear uppermost

Stay in this position for 2-3 minutes to allow the drops to soak into the earwax

Dr. Nina Byrnes – Hidden Hearing’s Medical Advisors Top Wax Tip –

“Before bed, apply the ear drops or olive oil to the ear and then put some cotton wool with a smear of Vaseline on the inside of into the ear & sleep like that. The earwax is softened and it often breaks up if you put in drops at least once a day for 3/5 days”.

How Often Should You Clean Your Ears?

There is no one answer to this as everyone’s body produces ear wax at a different rate, so it’s impossible for doctors, to give a definitive answer. Genetics, diet and exercise can all be other factors effecting wax build up. Our professional ear wax removal specialists can advise you on what frequency you should clean your ears.

On Mothers Day, we celebrate that special woman who has done so much for us over our life time. Our mom’s have done so much for us over the years and its only as we grow older we come to realize the scale of what our mothers did. Our childhoods were carefree, life was easier and most importantly she was always there to lend an ear or opinion.

This Mother’s Day on Sunday 26th, wouldn’t it be great to celebrate that amazing woman and take her out? As we seldom see our parents as we get older due to having our own lives, jobs, family’s or living in a different part of the world, take this time to really notice your mother. If she has changed her hair, or maybe you notice her hearing is not the same as it once was. Hearing loss can be a big issue for many people and can be easily cared for by making a free hearing consultation in one of our 75 branches or clinics nationwide.

Today we are finding that more and more women are dealing with hearing loss issues and are not taking the measures to get the care they deserve due to the stigma attached to hearing loss and the old perception of what a hearing aid looks like. Many women also complain that their husbands don’t listen or cant hear well. Some think this is due to ‘selective hearing’. However rather than a hearing loss due to aging, they could be suffering from blocked ears with earwax.

From our recent street survey, we found that 1 in 4 people are now suffering from noise induced hearing loss. They additionally suffer from ringing in their ears. This could be a symptom of tinnitus which also should be treated with care. Read our recent blog post on tinnitus.

Show the parents & especially your mother a bit of care love and attention this mothers day. If you notice a hearing loss, schedule them in for a free consultation. Hidden Hearing also offer free earwax removal for the over 55’s in selected branches nationwide. Book your free appointment today.

Our own Hidden Hearing Mayo Audiologist, Ashley Cunningham, sat down with the Mayo Advertiser to discuss the work that is carried out at Hidden Hearing in Mayo, Hearing Loss FAQ’s and to enlighten readers on how to help friends or family members with hearing impairments.

Ashley runs our clinics in Ballina, Claremorris, and Westport. Other Hidden Hearing Mayo locations include Ballinrobe and Castlebar.

Mayo Advertiser / Hidden Hearing Mayo Q & A

Why did you decide to become an audiologist?

Ashley: I started my career as an audiologist in the UK 19 years ago and I have been working in Mayo for the last eight years. I was motivated to understand more about hearing from seeing my father’s hearing loss and the negative impact that it had on him and on our family, so that sparked my interest.

What interests you about audiology?

Ashley: I love helping people to hear better. The gratification I take from my job is when I receive thanks from family or the person that I have been able to help with their hearing loss and helping them attain a better quality of life. To receive that positive feedback gives me a real buzz.

How can I recognise if I have hearing loss or hearing problems?

Ashley: There are a number of indicators that you might start to notice. If you are with someone who has a hearing problem, you may notice the television is being turned up louder than per usual or you are having to repeat yourself more often. Certainly socially, hearing loss affects how you may hear in a group situation when there is background noise, so if you are noticing you or a loved one is struggling to hear in those types of situations then it is quite likely there is a hearing problem which needs attention.

Do you think there is still negativity towards having a hearing check?

Ashley: When I first started out as an audiologist, there was certainly a stigma attached to wearing hearing aids. However, back then hearing aids were cumbersome and unsightly whereas today it is more generally much more accepted to be wearing something around your ears. Certainly, the younger generation today are very accustomed to having MP3s or Bluetooth headsets so there is much less stigma now with modern technology as hearing aids become much more discreet. Most hearing aids can be completely hidden and because of that I believe there is less negativity associated with them. I see all ranges of people from different age groups. People are more hearing aware today.

What are the most common causes of hearing loss?

Ashley: Generally it is age; hearing wear and tear is the number one cause, with noise exposure being second. Then we can have hereditary hearing loss so it is not unusual to see people’s hearing loss run in families.

What are the effects of untreated hearing loss?

Ashley: Early detection is the key. The longer hearing loss is left to develop, the less hearing we have to work with. We can only work with what hearing is left. Once your hearing is gone there is no getting it back.

What would you recommend I do to encourage someone I know to have a hearing test done?

Ashley: The first point is to recognise that you may have a hearing problem and then make an appointment to have your hearing checked. Everybody, ideally, should have a baseline hearing test done at some point. At Hidden Hearing we have a wellness programme, where we work in conjunction with local GPs and encourage everyone to have this baseline screening; this allows us, in the future, to measure comparisons over a period of time. So if you find that you are having problems with your hearing, it is really just a question of making an appointment, coming along to see the audiologist, having the hearing test done. At Hidden Hearing we will then do a full explanation of the hearing results so the patient will fully understand.

How many people would you screen on a daily basis?

Ashley: The clinics that I run here in Hidden Hearing Mayo are always very busy. We have had great success in helping people. On a daily basis, I would screen six people every day and then on top of that I would be maintaining people who I have prescribed hearing systems to, so doing follow ups and checks.

How important is the aftercare?

Ashley: The aftercare is absolutely critical, in terms of how you might be able to get on with that hearing system over a long period of time. It is not just a question of just being fitted up with the hearing equipment. It is very important to tailor the equipment to what your requirements may be.

Hidden Hearing also does free ear wax removals for people over the age of fifty five, is this a popular service?

Ashley: The free ear wax removals at Hidden Hearing is a great service because it allows people to have their ears checked and have any wax removed, free of any charge. The service is very popular. We use the latest ear irrigation method to remove ear wax. The technique we use is a much safer way of removing ear wax and I would certainly recommend it.

There you have it from our lovely Audiologist, Ashley. A special thanks to Mayo Advertiser’s Matt Cassidy for writing the article.

Name: Fiona Dunne

Title: Customer Services Administrator

Years with Hidden Hearing; 11 years

Favorite part of the job: Getting someone’s problems solved, if it’s something that can be done over the phone all the better. It is refreshing to hear the relief in the client’s voice when they know that they have been listened to and that someone will be out to see them if required.

A typical day for Fiona

Arrive at work at approx 8.30am : I arrive in the office and kick start the day by putting the kettle on for the first coffee of the day. I then log on to my computer to see what emails were received overnight and I listen to the phone messages that were made overnight.

9.00-11.00 : I follow up on any phone calls or emails that were made overnight, fielding inbound calls and emails from client and staff, and also now monitoring our new live chat feature via our new website. Telephone calls can be different and you don’t know where the conversations will go or how long one call will last, this makes the day interesting as no two days are ever the same.s

11.00 -12.30 : We normally receive the post in to the office at approximately 11.00 am after it has been sorted into the different departments. I open all the customer service post any service/ repairs or repair paper work is passed to my colleague Olga. I prioritise all my paperwork which is to be input and up dated on to our system & close off service requests reports that have been completed.

LUNCH TIME! WELL YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS THERE!!

1.30 – 2.30 : Now it’s Olga’s time for lunch, so I monitor all phone calls, from the designated phone line that we have for our clinics to call when they need to contact customer services. I also monitor all emails and respond to live chat requests received. Just like Olga did when I was on lunch, most days can be busy,

2.30 – 5.00 : Welcome back Olga,,, This is the longest stretch and by 4.00 pm most of the day’s tasks would be completed by now, finishing off any call backs that have to be made, sometimes you don’t like to contact too early in the morning as people can be in bed or at Mass., Ensuring that the last of the paperwork, and tasks have been done so everything is left clear for the following day and the new day to start again.

Our friendly and experienced customer service team are only a phone call or an email away and will be able to help with a multitude of queries on freephone 1800 818 808 or Email: customercare@hiddenhearing.ie

The Hidden Hearing Blog is the Bronze Winner at the Blog Awards Ireland 2015

The competition was stiff but we came third on the Best Health and Wellbeing Blog – Company at the Blog Awards Ireland 2015. We will be wearing our bronze medal with pride! We are very grateful for the nomination and above all we are very grateful to everyone who has visited the Hidden Hearing blog over the last few years.

Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to vote for us: 30% of the overall vote was accounted for by the public, with the remaining 70% being determined by a panel of judges, and we really appreciate the support. Our blog covers a wide range of hearing healthcare topics from tinnitus and ear wax removal to hearing aids and and the effects that hearing loss can have on day to day life and we are thrilled to receive this recognition of the site.

A huge thanks to everyone who voted for us, it really is appreciated.

Career profiles : Customer Services Team

Name: Olga Mahon

Title: Customer Service & Repairs Agent

Years with Hidden Hearing: 4 Years

Favorite part of the job: I enjoy being part of a team that is principally there to assist and help people. A customer service agent is often the face a company, so it is important to ensure that each potential and existing customer has a pleasant experience. Acting as an extension of Hidden Hearing’s brand and core values, this task is accomplished by treating each customer in a courteous manner, greeting them and answering every question in a pleasant and efficient manner. My role is very diverse and I have many responsibilities. As our department deals with all types of queries and questions I love getting in and through a busy work load. Secondly I love the ongoing knowledge that is gained through my role, being on a busy Customer Services team, every day is different and brings on new challenges.

A typical day for Olga:

8.30: I arrive at the office, get my coffee, go through my emails, and review my list of pending issues. I deal with the repairs so I get my repair paperwork in order so that I am organised for the day.

9.00-10:30: My priority first thing is to make sure that overnight voicemails and emails have been responded to and dealt with in which ever manner is needed. I then separate and organise my repairs paperwork to identify which repairs are due in to us that day and which ones are coming back to us or going direct to our branches.

10:30-12:30: Our post arrives and having gone through it I then I work on any new repairs that have come in. I inspect them, make sure that all the necessary paperwork is correct. Batch it according to the manufacturers and send it off by registered post. In the meantime I am answering incoming calls to assist clients with queries and where needed get clients booked into our nationwide clinics or indeed assist with clients who require a home service appointments.

12.30-1:30: I use the hour before lunch to place the follow-up calls I need to make to customers and our internal staff. I also use this time to make sure that I have my paperwork and tasks all sorted for the afternoon. Our couriers usually arrive within this hour with all new orders and repairs that have come back from our manufactures I get these processed and notify all parties.

1:30-2:30: Lunch time!

2:30- 4:30: This stretch of time I use to catch up on my other daily duties like running reports to make sure that all repairs and payments are correct. Also in this time if I have any queries that need to be brought to my manager’s attention I would usually discuss them at this point. I also look after all the completed Service service check-up appointment reports for our nationwide branches at this time I revise these make sure all is correct and then file them. I also look after our dispenser phone line which is there so that any of our staff can call us at any time throughout the day should they need any particulars or assistance. This phone is on all day so this is an ongoing task.

4:30-5.00: This is the wrap-up portion of the day where I do some final paperwork, organize my notes/tasks for tomorrow, and catch up on any email.

5.00: Time to head for home!

Our friendly and experienced customer service team are only a phone call or an email away and will be able to help with a multitude of queries on freephone 1800 818 808 or Email: customercare@hiddenhearing.ie
