Let’s face it, it’s easy to fill up while you’re watching a game on TV and football fare isn’t always the healthiest food available. This year, as we watch the UEFA European Championships in France, we’re making an effort to enjoy some hearing healthy recipes at half time.
Keeping your ears healthy is something that many people don’t consider, but the auditory processing system functions better, and remains healthy for longer, in individuals who eat a good, balanced diet containing plenty of minerals and vitamins. These help to keep the ears healthy and to fight off ear infections, which can cause hearing loss.
Food Ideas to Prevent Hearing Loss
1.Nachos. These can be tasty and good for you, just be sure to include plenty of red bell peppers in your salsa and fill up on healthy avocado guacamole, packed with folate and brain-healthy fats to promote your general health as well as lower your risk of age-related hearing loss.
2.
Super smoothies. If you’re looking for a healthy half-time option, you can’t do better than a delicious smoothie. Strawberries are great for vitamin C, bananas add potassium, and a good handful of brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds and chia seeds will give your ears a brilliant boost.
3. Stuffed mushrooms. Mushrooms are a great source of vitamin D, which has anti-inflammatory properties and strengthens the tiny bones in the ear. Stuff mushrooms with spinach, walnuts and goats cheese to add essential omega 3 fatty acids to your snack.
4. Curry. A good vegetable curry can boost your body in many ways, and it’s the perfect meal for sharing! Sweet potatoes make a great base and are bursting with alpha lipoic acid, which defends against free radical damage and supports the natural functions of the inner ear, and potassium rich spinach makes a good addition to any curry. Serving with brown rice will add a dose of magnesium, which lowers stress levels and can help to ease hearing sensitivities such as tinnitus.
5.
Banana split. It may not sounds like the healthiest option, but if you begin with a potassium rich banana and add other superfruits such as apricots and melons, as well as kiwi and papaya to boost your levels of vitamin C, you’ll balance out that little bit of ice-cream on top! Adding a handful of chopped nuts will give you a magnesium boost, too.
