Many people worry about wearing hearing aids, and the social stigma associated with them is often cited as a reason to put off seeking help for hearing loss. However, the technology that comprises hearing aids today is highly sensitive and more advanced than the technology in a smartphone! As a result, hearing aids are smaller and more discreet than ever before, and some, known as invisible hearing aids, cannot be seen by others at all.
If you have any concerns about your hearing, visit us at Hidden Hearing to find out how we can help. You can try our range of digital hearing aids and talk to us about which solution will work best for you. It can help to know a little more about how hearing aids work, and the following information may be useful:
Hearing Aid Technology
- Hearing aids contain tiny microphones that receive sounds and then convert them into electrical messages
- An amplifier inside the hearing aid makes the signals louder and transmits them into the speaker.
- In behind-the-ear hearing aids, the speaker, amplifier and microphone are all held in a hard case behind the ear, and the sound from these is funneled into the ear canal through a tube and into a plastic dome.
- The battery compartment also sits in the case behind the ear in a BTE hearing aid, but in other types of hearing aid, such as in-the-canal hearing aids, the battery is part of the tiny hearing aid that sits in the ear canal and there is no plastic tubing. These are often preferred for cosmetic reasons, but may be harder to clean.
- In-the-ear hearing aids can sit partially in the ear and partially behind it, depending on the nature of the hearing loss. Some of these devices are designed to fill the outer ear, and some, known as half shells, fill only half of it.

- Receiver-in-canal hearing aids contain a behind-the-ear component, but have a speaker that sits in the ear canal and is connected to the amplifier and microphone by a small electrical wire that is far less visible than plastic tubing
